Business Development Success

How The New CEO Was Selected

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his directors or his children, he decided to do something different.

He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, “It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you.”

The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. “I am going to give each one of you a seed today one very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and then I choose will be the next CEO.”

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.

Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Jim continued to check his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn’t have a plant and he felt like a failure. Six months went by–still nothing in Jim’s pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn’t say anything to his colleagues, however. He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil – He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn’t going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick at his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful–in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives. Jim just tried to hide in the back. “My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown,” said the CEO. “Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!”

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, “The CEO knows I’m a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!” When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed. Jim told the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, “Behold your next Chief Executive! His name is Jim!” Jim couldn’t believe it. Jim couldn’t even grow his seed. “How could he be the new CEO?” the others said.

Then the CEO said, “One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today.

I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead – it was not possible for them to grow. All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers.

When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it.

Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive!”

If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.
If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.
If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.
If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment.
If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective.
If you plant hard work, you will reap success.
If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.
If you plant faith in the universe, you will reap a harvest.

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.

May you and all permanently experience prosperous health, happiness and abundance

CPA Examines Four Most Common Moneymakers And Offers Advice On How To Decide Which One Is Right For You.

CPA Examines Four Most Common Moneymakers And Offers Advice On How To Decide Which One Is Right For You.

(Yes I am a currently licensed CPA and one person said this is a rambling article. Until I make it more focused, I thought by understanding some of the analysis I work through that it may help you do the same.)

There are only four ways to make money. They are:

1. A Job
2. Direct Markeing (includes internet marketing)
3. Network Marketing
4. Professional Services

Right away many people are going to say: “owning your own business is a way to make money!”. True and if you have your own business you either have a job or you are selling professional services. Your business might also be focused on direct marketing or network marketing.

There are advantages and disadvantages to every one of those ways to make money. The key question is “what is it that you are supposed to do?”

I was in the grocery store today and at the checkout counter, there was a young man helping bag the groceries. He said hello with a smile, asked me how I was doing with a smile and said thank you with a smile when I was leaving. It seemed to me this young man was very happy and it also seemed to me that maybe there were some limitations to his mental capacity. I am thinking – let me get this straight: here is a person who is happy, is making money and loves what he does. He is not handicapped. Too many days I am not happy, I am pissed off at not doing better and do not like at all some of what I have to do. For the record I am aggessively addressing all of that since anything negative is a total waste of energy.

I have spent alot of time in the past five years studying and working with the principles of direct response marketing including using the tools of the Internet for direct response marketing. There are masters in the profession of direct response marketing. Do I want to be one of those masters? I once thought so. Today I am more content to continue my study and work in those areas and then call upon a master when a master is needed.

Along the way of doing all this work, I woke up to the reality that if you create a direct mail campaign, a direct response advertisement, a product to sell on line (and then do the work to sell it) when those events are over, you have to do it all over again to make money again. Sure I know there are ways to generate residual income with continuity programs and percentage based marketing programs tied to sales growth. Certainly Gary Bensevenga doesn’t complain about the money he still gets paid from the ad copy he wrote years age.

I ask myself what are the chances of developing continuity income like John Reese has and deserves with The Reese Report or the continuity income developed by Dan Kennedy, Ken McCarthy and other marketing celebrities. Could I do that? I believe a person can do anything they make their mind up to doing within certain physical limitations. (Marty St. Louis who is about 5′6″ and weighs 185lbs. wet, has raised the bar on what physically is possible with his performance as star in the NHL.)

The real question is: do I really want to do what Dan Kennedy does or what Ken McCarthy does? Do I really believe I could?

I listened to a lecture today (yes today before I went to the grocery store and yes this did all happen today) by a lady who was highlighting the contents of her book “This Time I Dance! Creating The Work You Love” Her name is Tama Kieves and I encourage you to look her up at http://www.awakeningartistry.com . Bottom line: we need to look deep as to what it is we really want to do.

Some will say: ” I just want to win the lottery and do nothing.” I submit to you that none of us really want to do just nothing. Try it and see how long you can do just nothing. It is our nature to contribute. It is our nature to learn. It is our nature to teach. It is our nature to love. By the way I have a plan for exactly what I will do when I win the lottery and it is way beyond, well let me rephrase that, it is a few steps removed from just laying around a beach drinking the best single malt scotch this world has to offer.

A pharmacist who is still a very good friend of mine introduced me to network marketing in the 90’s. Until then I felt the way many people do that companies in that industry were scams. I was very wrong. Today my former wife still gets a check averaging $300-$500 a month as a result of work I did almost 10 years ago. Of course I am always suggesting to people “what they should do” and I was a master of that with her which is probably why she is my former wife. I do believe that by following a couple extra steps that check could easiy be $1,000 a month or $10,000 a month or more.

It doesn’t matter why I didn’t stay real active in that industy. What matters is what I have learned from a handful of very successful leaders in that industry. How do I define success? Leaders whose residual income is at least $1 million dollars annually and growing at a rate of at least 30% a year. Here is what I learned from them:

- You don’t have to create your own product
- You don’t have to create your own accounting and tracking system
- You have immediae access to a growing number of like minded people with increasing success.
- The business development process and the business is structured so a 6th grader can understand it and do it. This means it appeals to the masses who are interested in improving their lives. (This does not mean you should throw away all you learned about direct response marketing and using the Internet. Quite the contrary. The more skills you have the better you will be.)
- True leaders develop themselves first and their business success follows.

For those of you who have talked with me at any length, you know there are a couple of people who have influenced me alot in recent years. The Attractor Factor by Joe Vitale was a catalyst (he is releasing a new book soon – visit www.zerolimits.info)and that led me to Randy Gage who led me to Catherine Ponder and others. Now if you go to www.RandyGage.com you will find his prosperity principle resouces. I have some of them. While studying his material and reading Randy’s Rants every two weeks or so when he sends them out, I realized I really identify with Randy’s thinking. When I noticed a full page ad recently in a national magazine with Randy saying he was activating his work in a network marketing company, I stood up and took notice. Could I possibly have the opportunity to work directly with him? The answer is yes and I am in the early stages of that. For more information on that business please visit www.internationalsuccess.com

By now you are probably thinking OK, Steve plans on winning the lottery and spends most of his life pursuing a new network marketing opportunity. Well you are wrong again. I happen to have a job and I am pursuing a network marketing opportunity with Randy, and I am re-energizing a campaign to market two physical products that I developed in the 90’s and I am a pretty active member of three high powered internet marketing membership sites where I contintue to absorb all I can. Did I mention I have an outline of a book done and will publish it later this year or early next year. Does all of that make sense for me? Yes it does because there is actually a common thread. The common thread is marketing, a discipline I really enjoy. Am I totally happy with all of this? No! Why? That currently is personal but I assure you I am addressing this since I find anything less than being happy, content and at peace unacceptable.

The company I am running is a secret. They a very successful online based business. I am directly responsible for this company starting in 1996 and the owner is the reason for it’s success. I have nothing to do with that success, but I am having alot to do with taking the business to a much higher level.

What about my consulting practice? Obviously I cannot be on sight with clients like I used to. But I have large network of highly skilled professionals and I will continue to help those that want that help by what I write and by connecting them with others who I know deliver results.

Is what I am doing now my final game plan? Hardly! The key point of all this is I am sharing with you how I am figuring it out for me and what about you?

What makes sense for you?

May you and all permanently experience prosperous health, happiness and abundance

Do Your Study Prosperity or How To Make Money?

Most of my life I studied for knowledge that would position me to have a career that was attractive to me. Then I advanced my work to study knowledge in areas where I had little formal training but were of interest to me. The fundamental goal of this work was making more money. A related goal was to do work I enjoyed. But making money was the primary goal.

In the Spring of 2005 three major events that most people would categorize as very negative arrived in my life. Shortly thereafter a book by Joe Vitale was released named The Attractor Factor. Joe mentioned Randy Gage in that book. I looked up Randy and bought one of his tape programs.

Randy’s material awoke in me a thirst for more material. There were one key point that really hit home for me. Randy described the many major negative events he had worked through in his life. He then added that he had discovered “the one person always at the scene of the crime.” Of course that was him. Wow, did that ever open my eyes.

I also discovered who influenced Randy and went on line and immediately purchased “The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity” by Catherine Ponder. That book helped me understand that all this time I had been working on learning how to make money, but I had spent almost no time studying how to be prosperous.

Once I started studying prosperity, I was able to withstand a continuation of what I would label a downward spiral. These were thrown at me to test my prosperity belief system My life has not immediately “turned around”. However, an increasing number of more prosperous circumstances have arrived and I know that trend will continue.

What am I studying now? First I don’t stop reminding myself of the prosperity principles that I have learned. I carry notebooks with me when I travel with the lessons that that I feel are most important for me. I have learned the negativity in the world inundates us daily and you need to continually work on your defenses.

Recently I purchased Randy’s newest book titled “Why You’re Sick Dumb & Broke.” Randy is an “in your face writer.” At times some people would probably label him as offensive. Randy helps me clarify my belief system. Personally there is not one thing in his latest book where I disagree with Randy. More importantly his latest book has helped my thinking in a couple of areas further develop.

As an example, Randy writes that you cannot really help someone else unless you are a happy person. He restates what other teachers have written which is our purpose is to be healthy, happy and prosperous. Until I read this book I did not have a clear statement of purpose. I had worked on this statement from some of my other research and thought I had a definition. But I like Randy’s summary of purpose which is “My Purpose Is To Be Happy” In the book you will find a terrific explanation the the meaning of that statement.

You have to study how to be healthy, happy and prosperous because it is highly likely you were never taught how to achieve them. You can’t get this material from a seminar or from late night infomercials. Being healthy and happy do not result from making money and material things even thought there is nothing wrong with making allot of money and wonderful material things.

I encourage you to study prosperity. I encourage you to develop your philosophy or your belief system. I encourage you to think about what impacts your daily life including the work you do, the people you come in contact with and the material that influence your thinking. I am finding I am happier now more frequently than I have been previously. The goal is to be that way 100% of the time. I am working on it.

A Chance To Do Something Amazing

Randy’s messages to me start out “Dear Steve” Anyone who addresses me as Dear Steve with sincerity is a friend. I know Randy very well from his books, tapes and Randy’s Rant. Fasten your seat belts.

—————————————————————–
Randy’s Rants
—————————————————————–

Dear Steve,

It’s another New Year, and another chance to do something
amazing with your life.

Please read that last sentence again, and really think about it.
Can you imagine a life of challenge, adventure, and growth; a
life not just of success, but also significance. Can you imagine
living an “amazing” life?

I hope you can, because that is your true destiny, the one you
are meant to live.

But that may take a new way of thinking, one radically different
than what you’ve been doing for many years of your life. It may
mean reevaluating your core beliefs about money, success,
health, religion, government, and happiness.

Unfortunately, most people have lost the ability for critical
thinking. They have been told “what” to think for so long,
they’ve actually forgot “how” to think. Independent thought has
given way to herd thinking, and discernment has been replaced
with mindless acquiescence.

Today a politician with some marketing savvy and an
understanding of how to exploit the media can write their own
ticket. And once they are elected in a position of influence,
they can accumulate powers that most dictators only dream of. Of
course depots like Idi Amin, Fidel Castro, and Papa Doc
imprisoned their enemies, spied on their subjects, tapped their
phones and read their mail. But at least they had the common
courtesy to deny doing so.

Now President Bush detains people for years in prison camps
without charging them, denies them due process, and he will not
only spy on you, wiretap your phone conversations, and read your
email – but he actually brags about it, and tell you it is good
for you! And the herd will nod their heads and say, “well if it
prevents another 9/11…”

But I’m ranting again, aren’t I?

The fascinating thing is, if they can get you to ask the wrong
question – the answer doesn’t really matter.

I’m writing this on my way to Hawaii. I’m on the first leg,
which is a 9.05 AA flight from Miami to DFW. Since I am tall
enough, vain enough, stupid enough, and rich enough to overpay
an extra $3,000, I’m sitting up front, and get served breakfast.
The coach cabin has a “food for purchase” program.

The question they were asked in the back was whether they wanted
to buy potato chips, trail mix, a large bag of M&M’s, or a
quarter pound Snickerdoodle cookie. Of course the question that
no one is asking, is what happens to people who eat a canister
of chips, big bag of M&M’s, or a quarter pound sugar cookie for
breakfast?

If you want to be happy, if you want to have a great New Year,
if you want to live an amazing life – you have to think
differently. You’re going to have to start questioning things –
and asking the right questions.

I don’t think the critical thinking necessary to living an
amazing life comes from pondering the question, “What is the
meaning of life?” The real question for you is likely more along
the lines of, ‘What would bring meaning to my life?’

Each year at this time, I do a lot of reflection on what kind of
year I have had, and where I want to go in the next one.
Hopefully you do as well. The end of the calendar year marks a
good delineation for making changes, enacting new habits, and in
particular, replacing old beliefs that no longer serve you.

As I do my inventory, I have to say I have lived an amazing life
thus far. I’ve seen the curvature of the earth from 58,000 feet
on the Concord, written seven books, fell in love in Paris, been
in the stands when my team won Game Seven of the World Series,
hit a few walk-off homeruns for my own softball teams, scuba
dived with giant sea turtles, flown a plane, prayed in the
Crystal Cathedral, meditated in a Shaolin Temple, saw a ballgame
with Roger Clemens pitching against Greg Maddox in Wrigley Field
no less, rang the bells in a church tower, rode a hot air
balloon, won a Viper drag race competition, visited over 35
countries, was able to make sure that last words they ever heard
from me were ‘I love you” for my grandmother, grandfather and
great aunt before they died, and most rewarding of all, I have
been able to help thousands of people see the inherent greatness
they possessed, before they knew they had it.

Now it hasn’t been all joy and fun and seasons in the sun…

I had my restaurant seized by the IRS, spent time in jail for
armed robbery, got shot on the other side of another robbery,
ingested more controlled substances than you’ll find in a
Walgreen’s warehouse, and attracted enough negative
relationships to fill Dr. Phil’s broadcast schedule for the next
two years.

But you know what?

I have lived an amazing life. And the wonderful things far
outweigh the bad ones. And truth be told, it was the bad ones
that allowed me to become the person I am, and manifest the
wonderful things. If I do it all over again, I wouldn’t change
one single thing.

But I’m not done. And neither are YOU.

It is 2007, and adventure is beckoning you, calling you by name.
This is your chance to start or continue the adventure called
your life. But it will take discernment, critical thinking, and
asking the right questions.

So what’s more important? Obsessing over who sent you a holiday
card that you didn’t have on your list – or calling someone who
was on your list and telling them how much they really mean to
you?

You can worry about how you’ll pay that extra $500 or $1,000 you
charged up for holiday presents. Or you could devote that
thought process to how you can create enough value in the
universe to manifest an extra $200,000 or $350,000 in income
this year.

Think about most of the things most people worry about: Their
neighbor’s leaves blowing into their yard. Their apples falling
into their neighbor’s yard. Whether they tipped the waiter or
pizza guy $2 too much.

They could only get four not five of the new releases they
wanted at the video store, so they can veg away their weekend.
They actually have to walk half a block, because they couldn’t
find a closer parking space at the mall. The substitute mail
carrier comes 30 minutes later than the regular one.

These things, and thousands more like them, are the daily
worries of the herd. You don’t have time for that. Your life is
far too short. You have to escape the herd and be a contrarian.

And speaking of contrarians, Larry Winget has a new book just
released this week. Buy it today. Better yet, buy five or ten.
Donate a few to the library, pass out a couple to your deadbeat
relatives. But read it yourself.

The title is, “It’s called Work for a Reason” because this book
is straight talk about business. Larry covers everything from
making sales and delivering high quality customer service, to
leadership, sexual harassment, dealing with idiots, hiring and
firing, and how to become invaluable to your company and your
customers.

He trashes a lot of what you hold dear and have become
comfortable with. He doesn’t care whether you love your job or
are happy at work. It’s not about being happy or loving your
job: it’s about doing your job! His chapter entitled “Teamwork
Doesn’t Work” will confound and astound you. And Larry’s “Dirty
Dozen Employer Handbook” and “Dirty Dozen Employee Handbook” are
priceless. He also gives you a huge list of “short, hard
expensive lessons” that alone are worth the price of the book.

Publisher’s Weekly raved about the book in a review and I got an
advance copy that I loved. I think it’s destined to become a
business classic. The book epitomizes Winget’s caustic,
no-holds-barred style, yet like anything Larry does, it is
hilarious. His stories will make you laugh while they teach you
the simple truth about every area of business success.

If you remember, I told you about his last book, which was,
“Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life!” I love Larry because he
is a contrarian. We have a lot in common, but we’re still each
unique.

Like me, Larry is bold, brash, and controversial. He doesn’t
worry about political correctness, or what you think of him. He
shaves his head too, although he’s not quite as good looking as
I am. He’s not afraid to get in your face, although he doesn’t
possess the subtlety, diplomacy, and tact that I do. And of
course he doesn’t have the humbleness, modesty, and considerable
humility I do. But don’t hold that against him.

Larry’s books are fun, entertaining and thought-provoking.
They’re the perfect antidote to herd thinking. And his new book
is the perfect one to start the New Year with, and develop the
mindset to live an amazing life.

Get it and you’ll be glad you did. Here’s the link for complete
details: http://www.larrywinget.com/itscalledwork.html

Please use the book as a small part of the big new goal for
2007, living an amazing life.

Some other things you could do in 2007 to have an amazing life:

Volunteer at a homeless or runaway youth shelter. Write a book.
Adopt a child with special needs. Start a workout program. Take
up ballet. Eat only fresh fruit until noon each day. Learn to
ride a unicycle. Get rich. Compose an Opera. Learn a new
language. Learn your old language. Take up painting, or
sculpture, or woodcrafts. Get enough sleep. Stay up till 4 am
sometimes, but make it worth it. Rescue a pet from the Humane
Society. Find a cure for a disease. Forgive somebody. Forgive
everybody. (Even yourself.) Send some money to the relief effort
in Africa. Send some money to the relief effort in your own
town. Pray for Peace. Unplug your TV for a month. Take up a
musical instrument. Get a tattoo or a piercing. Have a midlife
crisis.

There are lots more I could suggest, but you get the point. And
the whole point is whatever you do, it should come from your
critical thinking, not mine. I will say this: If you sleep about
seven hours a day, work about eight, and then watch TV or movies
for about five, your chances of living an amazing life are
pretty slim. But reactivate your brain, change some patterns, do
some critical thinking, question some beliefs, and the odds look
pretty good.

For some of you, living an amazing life will mean you have to
give up drugs and alcohol. For others, you need to find some
wicked weed and get stoned.

Maybe you spend money foolishly and need to learn how to
cultivate wealth. Maybe you need to stop being so poverty
conscious and treat yourself to flying First Class, a day at the
spa, or buying a $1,000 pair of shoes.

Some of you need to connect with the spiritual power that
governs your world. Some of you need to lose all the doctrines
and dogma you were brainwashed with by your religion and learn
to think for yourself.

Maybe gambling is destroying your life and you need to join a
12-step group to stop. Or maybe you need to fly off to Vegas for
the weekend and plunge your lungs out.

You may need to stop running away from intimacy, be willing to
do the work that a relationship entails, and commit to your one
true soul mate in the world. Or you may need to find a bordello
or swingers club and fuck your brains out.

Your life doesn’t have to be a Robert Ludlum novel, a James Bond
movie, or an Indiana Jones adventure. But it doesn’t have to be
“Little House on the Prairie” either! What about if you didn’t
always wear your favorite outfit, eat at the same restaurant,
order the same entrée, drink the same drink, leave the same tip,
and drive the same way home? What if you got out of your rut?

What if 2007 was really, truly different than 2006? What if it
was the most amazing year of your life? And what about if it
started today?

Happy New You.
